My name is Chris Morren and I own and operate Great Outdoor Advertising. I was born in 1961 in Rexdale and my backyard faced the A & P (now Shoppers Drug Mart/McDonalds/Beer Store/TD Bank) plaza at Kipling & Dixon Road. I've been interested in advertising from about the age of 10 when the Cadbury TV commercial revealed the reason Mona Lisa was smiling-she had just just taken a bite of a Caramilk bar !
I went to Ryerson and received my Diploma in Marketing which does not explain why I work full-time as an Order Selector in a grocery warehouse. I have only missed approximately 15 days of work in the last 2 years of the pandemic.
My sales career began in 1987 at Cummings Signs in Brampton, owned by Jim Pattison. We manufactured large, outdoor illuminated signs and along with our sister companies Claude Neon and Neon Products rented Gardiner Expressway "spectaculars". I was unceremoniously let go on September 29, 1992.
The next month I went to work for Steel Art Signs who was our biggest competitor, who also rented Gardiner "spectaculars". I was let go from there in June 1994.
At both companies above, I was the only sales rep who applied for my own permits and variances, despite having a dedicated Permit Manager.
In July 1994 I broke new ground for my immediate family and became an entrepreneur, starting Great Outdoor Advertising, renting giant, hand painted billboards in Toronto to the big ad agencies. To supplement my income, I also worked about 30 hours per week in the Sobeys grocery warehouse in Malton. In 2000, I sold the leases and name for $ 60,000 to Omni Outdoor, which was eventually bought by Astral Outdoor, which was eventually bought by Bell Media.
In December 1999 I went to work for OMG Media who had just gotten the contract with the City of Toronto to install 5,000 stainless steel recycling receptacles with advertising on both the front and back. I sold ads to the Diamond and Diamond Lawyers and other large local advertisers of the world, as well as some ad agencies.
I left OMG after a 1 1/2 years (without getting fired !) to work for Metroland Media/Torstar's Forever Young newspaper in Oakville. I was let go from there after about a year.
In 2002 I started Prestige Promotional Products selling logoed promotional items, and supplemented my income by working about 30 hours per week at IKEA on The Queensway (where I met my wife who worked as a cleaner) in the Home Delivery Department. I was unceremoniously (AGAIN !) let go from there in 2012.
With a struggling small business and four mouths to feed, I went into a deep depression but plodded on and bit the bullet. I was determined to provide for my family. I even went to to Oakdale Golf Club one weekend day to caddy instead of sulk, and walked away slightly less depressed but with an extra $ 100 cash in my pocket. Luckily a few months later I got a good paying job in a grocery warehouse where I have been for the last 10 years, and continue to work full time.
I resurrected Great Outdoor Advertising and registered it as a sole proprietorship in January 2022 when I acquired and rented the Long Branch billboards for a three year contract.
One of the reasons I am excited to be in business for myself again is the chance to make good on all the pet peeves I have with other companies, of which there are many, thus allowing my business to shine.
My wife came here from Peru all by herself at the age of 29. She is 12 years younger than I and I am forever grateful to her for making me a father for the first time at 48. She was my first girlfriend, which proves that I had very low self esteem and low self confidence. I don't need to buy lottery tickets because I won the lottery when I met Maritza. It just goes to show, NEVER GIVE UP !
I drive a Honda Civic and we live in a stacked townhouse. We are tired of paying maintenance fees of $ 500 per month because it's just money down the drain. I am trying to buy a small house in the area so my son can play basketball in the driveway, my daughter can have a trampoline or small above ground pool in the backyard we can have a ping pong table in the basement, all the things that I had as a kid.
